I had Milios for lunch today and I remembered they are another restaurant that delivers to our area, but not on Allied Drive. I remember about a month ago, there was a really bad snow storm and we didn't feel like going outside or cooking, and we were so indecisive on what to order, and finally decided that Milios would totally hit the spot. I love their sandwiches however would you believe that they made us walk over to the Boys and Girls Club to meet them? We said okay because we really wanted Milios, and the Boys and Girls Club is literally out our front door, through the neighboring building's parking lot, up a small three foot hill and we are at the back of the Boys and Girls Club. That small three foot hill was not such a small hill with all that snow. That driver could have driven another block, in my opinion. If anything, we should have gotten our delivery for half-off or something because they really did not deliver it all the way to us. Ahh well ... We made it up by not tipping the driver, which is bad I know, however the driver was the same guy who answered the phone and refused to come down to our place. I was feeling guilty for about 3 minutes until I came home to a really arrogant sounding voice mail from the driver asking us where we were at thinking we were blowing him off with our shady Allied Drive sandwich order. I haven't ordered Milio's for dinner since ...

Okay, I've read your articles and wrestled with the issue of race and class in Madison for some time.
I think you should take a delivery job and make your own decision to deliver to the Allied Drive area. Maybe you'll be tipped so well that the armed robberies won't matter. Maybe not. But either way, you'll be able to provide firsthand experience with the situation, rather than simply stiffing the poor person who is trying to make a living. You ridicule the hypocritical Madison elitist, yet reinforce things that reinforce that position, like stiffing the delivery driver and maintaining your lofty position that others should do as you say, not as you do.
I tip drivers who deliver to my house at least 25%. If the driver delivered to my place, I would have tipped. If you were having dinner at Olive Garden, and the waitress made you walk to the kitchen to pick up your plate after telling you she won't walk that far, would you have tipped her?

Let's get one thing straight: restaurants -- even fast food joints -- need to focus on providing something we can't all do at home. I mean, let's say that what I really need is fish and chips. Let's just say that's what I need right now. I can fire up the oven (we don't have a deep-fryer, thank God), and bake up some Gordon's fish sticks and Ore-Ida fries. This will be a sad and pathetic attempt at the Great National Dish of the United Kingdom, so instead I of trying to accomplish this meal on my own, I will head over to Brit's Pub and let the English do it for me while I sip on a pint of Strongbow.

Interesting topic about this. I was a delivery driver in Madison (including your area) about 15 years ago working through college.
My shop (an independent pizza joint in Madison) delivered everywhere but Allied Drive and Badger Lane (plus a few connected streets on Badger). We had delivered to all of those parts until some of my co-workers DID get held up along Allied and once on Badger.
On top of that, most deliveries in that area were "stiffs" (no tips). We would occasionally come across a "ten percenter" on Allied or Badger but that would maybe be...1 out of 5.
Working as a delivery driver is, essentially, being an independent contractor. The best ones (and I may have very well been the best in the city for four years because of work ethic and knowledge of the city's streets and traffic and light patterns) treated the job like any "sales" person. You get your best customers (high tippers) first and after a few weeks, you know you the tippers are and who the stiffers are.
Also, you know which buildings are virtually impossible to get into, which Badger and Allied buildings were (at least then) because of broken intercoms. This was before cell phones were common -- no way to get in? No pizza.
It does seem unfair (and, it probably is, technically, unfair) for some people to be able to get deliveries and others cannot. Please consider driver safety and past experience for why this is. NO business in Madison would turn down more business unless there is a good reason.
Between bad checks, unsafe drivers and the drivers complaining of bad tips, Badger-Allied just got to be bad business somewhere in the mid-1990s.
On top of this, gas was $1.15 when I was driving. At $3.45 a gallon, I imagine the "glory days" of clearing $600-$700 a week delivering pizzas may be a thing of the past.
Even if I disagree, keep up the blog. It makes for very interesting reading and reaction.

Where I live there are areas where there are high instances of crime against fast food deliveries. I would not want to personally have my living to be depended upon a job in the type of neighborhood you're talking about. From experience I think most cities have one or two undesireable neighborhoods, which I think are more uneducated related than race related.Maybe the youth need more to do so they have less time to get into trouble?
